The question that may now be raised is what effect does this shift of emphasis have on state theory, which has of course been massively influenced by Marx's nascent ideas? In other words, the question is whether Chomsky's observations and claims offer anything distinctive to debates on state theory and in so doing thereby constitute a theory of the state.
